Remember:  Ribbon, string and tinsel (icicles) are dangers to cats as when cats start chewing on them, the cats cannot spit them out so wind up swallowing the whole length.  This can led to a blockage or cutting of the intestines!  Keep all ribbon, string and other string like items away from cats.

Lilies are toxic to cats. Cats can die from kidney damage after eating even a small amount of a lily. Keep all lilies out the house! Don't put them on a high shelf- keep them out of the house!

Diamond Pet Food recall
« on: December 01, 2009, 02:18:18 PM »

Diamond Pet Foods makes the news again.

Cat food recalled over thiamine deficiency - http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/34223285/ns/health-pet_health/

Select bags of Premium Edge Finicky Adult Cat and Premium Edge Hairball could lead to gastrointestinal or neurological problems for cats, because they do not contain enough thiamine, an essential nutrient for cats.  If cats fed these foods have no other source of nutrition, they could develop thiamine deficiency. If untreated, this disorder could result in death.

Initial symptoms of thiamine deficiency include decreased appetite, salivation, vomiting and weight loss. Later, neurological problems could develop including, bending the neck toward the floor, wobbly walking, circling, falling and seizures.

The recalled bags of food were distributed in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Alabama, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.

I think that's the second time Diamond Pet Foods have been recalled...... best to stay away from that brand it seems.  Thanks for the "news".  I don't feed that brand but others might.

Thanks for posting that, CatsRme!

I didn't find any mention of this on Diamond's website, the parent company, which I think is irresponsible of them.  But the information is posted on the Premium Edge website at: http://premiumedgepetfood.com/announcements/66/

I am so disheartened and discouraged by all the many pet food recalls there have been over the year.

This kind of problem is why it is so important to feed cats a variety of brands/types of foods, and never only just one type.  So if a person did use that thiamine deficient Premium Edge dry food, but also fed their cats a different brand of wet food daily as well, there would not be a serious health issue, though there still could be some ill effects.

Nutro had a similar type problem a while back, involving an incorrect amount of potassium in one of their lines of dry cat food.

So, again, feed your pets a variety of foods, from different companies.

I see the recall is mentioned on MSNBC today.... it's the first I've seen it in the news.

These recalls should be on all the news stations as soon as they are announced.  Most people don't go online to search out information on possible recalls just because.  It is particularly bad for people who buy in bulk, and then might have lots of the bad food, still feeding it not knowing it can wind up seriously harming their cat.
