Remember:  Ribbon, string and tinsel (icicles) are dangers to cats as when cats start chewing on them, the cats cannot spit them out so wind up swallowing the whole length.  This can led to a blockage or cutting of the intestines!  Keep all ribbon, string and other string like items away from cats.

Lilies are toxic to cats. Cats can die from kidney damage after eating even a small amount of a lily. Keep all lilies out the house! Don't put them on a high shelf- keep them out of the house!

Emergency Vets
« on: November 25, 2011, 06:30:26 AM »

Ever since her first Vaccs on Monday little Misty our 11 week old kitten had not been 100%. Vet had warned us she may be sleepy & off food for 24 hours.

We were concerned on Wednesday night as she had not really picked up, gone off food etc & really worried on Thursday morning, sleepy, crying if you touched her & still not eating. We were so worried we did an emergency trip to the vets & just as well we did

Misty's temperature was very high st 106! She had had a reaction to the vaccination. Two injections & we got meds home for a week. Vet was very annoyed, said they were looking at a new manufacturer for the vaccs & would use it for her second jab in fortnight.

Shes such a tiny little girl, she only weighs a few pounds. When she came home she just fell asleep again

I hate those vaccinations that they give kittens. Drug companies are multimIllion dollar coporates yet they cant even get the vaccines right for these tiny *babies. Ok it doesnt affect them all but that is two of ours that are affected & two too many.

Vet phoned us this morning, they had been on to the Drug Rep. Vet feels that a vaccine that caused a temperature of 106 goes way over the norm. She was due back in fortnight but theyve deferred it for another week, let her get back to normal etc.

I dreaded Tim's booster guess it will be same with this wee one too

Overall i feel it just isnt good enough, it is we who are keeping these drug companies going & they cant even produce a safe vaccination. Its so unfair on these tiny defenceless little kittens.

Vet says they hate anything like this to happen as it puts people off getting their pets done which is worse as then the pets have no protection at all.

Sorry about poor little Misty!!! My goodness..... which vac was it?  I know you are not in the U.S...... are these vaccines REQUIRED by law where you live?  Here.. other than a rabies shot - the vaccines are only given at the owners discretion.  There are some vacs I absolutely won't allow my cats to be given because the side effects are so bad.  I just let them give the minimum that I feel are necessary based on my cats and their chances of encountering an infected cat or other animal (my cats are indoor for the most part - only outside for VERY limited times and NEVER leave our property).  I hope Misty is better today.... Please keep us informed.  I will keep her in my thoughts and prayers!

I'm sorry for Misty.

Were you the one who had the same problem with your other cat a few months ago?  I seem to remember it happening, but the situation only lasted two days or so.

I do know that I only vaccinate my little ones when I will be able to be with them for the next 24 hours or so (no going to work or away) just to watch for things like this.  Heck, Missy (RIP) had an allergic reaction to benydryl, which is the drug that you are given to deal with allergic reactions to other drugs.

I hope she gets better soon.

Tim had problems with the booster being very unwell for a few days. I think this was the first concrete evidence the vets had other than a pet being a bit off. They are going to try a different drug next time.however I am going to push for Misty's vacc to be given in two doses,it's not on these little kittens and will do the same for Tim, I don't care if it costs twice as much. We have two who react badly and two are ok however think two in same house is too big a percentage to ignore. We were worried sick over little Misty. Thankfully she is a bit better today, played a little, looked for food. She has lost so much ground.

I will keep here in my prayers.

My vets have been cuttung back on vaccinations for my little ones.  Since all are indoor only and I do not allow any interaction with untested cats, they wanted me to only give the mandated rabies vaccine.  I'm good with that. (Just to note, I have not had young kittens in several years so I am not up on the "kitten shots" now.)

What vaccinations did she receive?

Oh no! Timambmin, that particular vaccine sure sounds like it has something wrong with it.  Maybe that particular manufacturer isn't doing good safety checks, or something. For sure a different company's vaccine and maybe a different drug combo would want to be used from now on.

Do be sure to get the exact name. and the manufacturer, of the vaccine that made the problem so in the future, you will know to tell a vet to not use that exact vaccine from that particular manufacturer.

I hope Misty is well now.

Sorry not to be back to update, we have had a very urgent case to try and sort. Owner left what appears to be blind cat (keeps bumping into things - had car accident some 18 months ago) with a UTI into vets with instructions she didn't want it back, so we have been trying to get emergency foster. However heard just this afternoon vet is doing tests, results will hopefully through tomorrow. Much will depend no doubt on the test results & what care the cat will need. I think it's so wrong the owner can just walk away & absolve themselves of any  future care towards this poor cat. :(

Misty is heaps better, playing with Mindy, eating etc and thinks she is just one of the gang, which she is,  she has fitted in so well it is hard to believe that we have only had her two weeks today

Im not sure what the vet gave her. He has ticked all the Vaccs on the card and I assume this is because over the two (hopefully 3) different appointments, she will be covered by them all.

Although they are essentially house-cats, they do have access to their outdoor run and there are a lot of cats come through our garden. Many of them their owners never vaccinate.  There is always the "if you don't vaccinate and they take something" l could never forgive myself if something like that happened. One of the cats that is never vaccinated took cat flu a few months back & I caught it on before the owner did. Their other cat (who didn't take it) is always touching noses through the cat run wire with ours

Anyway Misty finished her medication today.  She has been so good at taking it, It is in Syrup form, I gently take her little head & rub her lips and she opens her little mouth for  me.

The day she returns for her second jab, I have booked Katie (dog) in for her booster so the little one will have company in the car

After this experience (thought Tim was a one off) will definitely be questioning the vaccinations/boosters each year. It is so not right that they can't product a vaccine that won't harm these tiny kittens.

Glad things are going well and that Misty is doing better.

Please keep us informed about the blind cat.  Having one myself (progressive rental atrophy), I know it takes some extra effort to care for one.  However, Little Bit, my blind cat, seems to be adapting quite well.
