Remember:  Ribbon, string and tinsel (icicles) are dangers to cats as when cats start chewing on them, the cats cannot spit them out so wind up swallowing the whole length.  This can led to a blockage or cutting of the intestines!  Keep all ribbon, string and other string like items away from cats.

Lilies are toxic to cats. Cats can die from kidney damage after eating even a small amount of a lily. Keep all lilies out the house! Don't put them on a high shelf- keep them out of the house!

Sparky is at the vets tonight
« on: January 02, 2012, 03:44:56 PM »

Since I couldn't get Onyx in for his vet appointment this morning, I took Sparky instead.  Sparky's belly has been consistently "round" and seems tender to the touch (in that he does not want you touching it seemingly due to pain).  So I decided to have him looked at because I do not want him to be in pain.

He urinated in the carrier on the way to the vets so he is being held overnight in the hopes of getting a urine sample in the morning.  They tried multiple times while I was out running errands but none could be had.  An ex-ray taken today shows that one of his kidneys appears to have a "scalloped" edge that was NOT there a couple of months ago when an ex-ray was taken.  So, that's why they want a urine sample.  They do not want to administer fluids to him because that will dilute the urine and therefore, not give us an accurate sample.  It is also hoped they will get a fecal sample as well because I can never catch him in the litter box here at the house. Dr. S also agreed that his tummy does seem to be painful for him.  She thinks it might be the kidneys or the bladder.  He is scheduled at this time for an ultrasound on January 30th at 12:30 in the afternoon.  It was the soonest appointment they had and the doc didn't think it was an emergency at this time (though the urine sample could change that).  The doctor who does the U/S is on vacation for the next two weeks (off today for the New Year holiday).

If we do need an ultrasound faster than that, I will need to travel to Latham to get one done there.  For now, however, we wait.

Glad Sparky got to the vets. Maybe not being able to get Onyx to go was a good thing, so that the vet could see something going on with Sparky's kidney.

I pray Sparky will be ok.

Just got home with Sparky about a half hour or so ago... .turns out he's FAT but the reason he doens't like his belly touched (as far as we can tell at this time) is likely due to the bladder or kidney issue that will be determined during the ultrasound later this month.  Currently, they did find blood in his urine so he is on a new antibiotic called "Orbax" - once a day until the ultrasound.  Tastes nasty but the first dose went in rather well today.  Not sure how long that will last  :escape_hide:  So.... hopefully after a day or two the antibiotic will kick in and ease whatever pain he is likely experiencing so he might become more active and start losing weight.  He's gained a whole pound since his last vet visit about 2 or 3 months ago.

Don't feel TOO bad for him Margaret... he's already in a "time out" for harassing Lexi. Everything was nice and quiet here while she had the entire run of the house the entire time he was gone.  Now it's back to hearing growling and hissing.....  :motocanaglia_rolleyes: :motocanaglia_rolleyes: :motocanaglia_rolleyes: :eusa_doh: :Trilly-hairpull

Well, being as he isn't feeling well, cut him some slack.  Best to keep them separate for most of the time. Maybe Sparky would be content to stay in one room while the antibiotics start taking effect to make him feel better.

All very well under consideration, Margaret... He was only in a time out for about 10 minutes - just enough to give him time to calm down a minute and get Lexi back into her room and calmed down.  All is quiet again!  :catwink: :catwink:
