Remember:  Ribbon, string and tinsel (icicles) are dangers to cats as when cats start chewing on them, the cats cannot spit them out so wind up swallowing the whole length.  This can led to a blockage or cutting of the intestines!  Keep all ribbon, string and other string like items away from cats.

Lilies are toxic to cats. Cats can die from kidney damage after eating even a small amount of a lily. Keep all lilies out the house! Don't put them on a high shelf- keep them out of the house!

Advice - I'm worried about Mindy
« on: January 15, 2012, 03:49:02 PM »

Hi Folks

I'm a bit uneasy about little Mindy.  She is just 8 months old.  Over the past few days (less than  a week) she has developed what appears to be a distended tummy.  She is no longer the kitten shape, more like an adult cat of 4/5 yrs with the big tummy.  I took a photo and sent it to a friend in rescue and she like myself thinks there is swelling. She is Spayed approx 2 months ago a d regularly wormed

Mindy is fine in herself, running about, playing, eating & drinking well, pooh & wee normal.   I will ring the vet in the morning to get her seen.

Even Tim or Amber at 19 & 17 months are not this shape :(

Can you look at the photos - which I appreciate are not all that clear nor do they show a true pictureof whatever it is.  She is such a lovely cat, a real treasure.

Has anyone ever seen anything like this in a kitten or young cat & know what it could be or do you think I am worrying unnecessarily?

This is more like what it's like - 2 furry cow udders hanging down, but her shape just doesn't look right

I never saw that. I assume you mean the white fur covered part on her side in front of a black patch of fur.  Is it just on that one side?  Maybe she has a very swollen abscess.

Anyway, for sure get her seen by a vet.

Hm... that is very odd.... do let us know what the vet says.  Hope it's nothing serious (or NOTHING which would be better, of course).  Definitely needs to see a vet.  Fingers and toes crossed over here...

It is not that she is getting fat since fat would make a more oval rounded shape, tapering on both ends, sort of like an American football, not a distinct "cutoff" from the sticking out part and the flat body parts.

Intestinal roundworms make the under belly get round when the worms get very numerous, almost like the cat is pregnant, not some parts jutting out from the sides, so that is not it. (I took in a stray cat that I thought was pregnant, but she was bloated with roundworms.)

It is unusual. Looks sort of like she is growing wings from her sides!

The good thing is that she is eating and eliminating normally, and not acting sick.

Do be sure to let us know what the vet says.

Good news is that Mindy is 100%.  When she was spayed 2 months ago she was 2 kilos and now she is 4.4 kilos.  Vet says he is not at all concerned as she still has growing to do. She is just going to be a big cat, well bigger than the other two adults. He didn't charge me for the visit either :)

I'm just a worry-wus :)

So, unless it was the angle of the pics, does she look like she has wings growing out her sides?

I guess she gains weight in an odd way.

Well, that's good news.  I worry about Sparky too because he's become rather "round" but they tell me he is just "fat" so I know what you mean.

She was odd looking for couple of days hence the vet visit.  The vet was quite thorough in his examination. The day I got her to the vet she didn't look quite as bloated if that is the right word. She is a sleek, shiny and smooth coated cat so perhaps I notice more.  The others have more of a very slight fluffy coat even the kitten has same type of coat.  What is interesting is that Mindy is the only one that came from a different area.  It almost as if the other cats/kitten had developed a coat to help them survive the harsher Coastal weather - if that makes sense?  They are all feral kittens.  Of course at 4 months Misty has not really developed so it could all change coat wise
