I just noticed my long haired female cat...possible main coon...is loosing hair, her 'behind' looks red, brown and irritated, there is hardly any hair left on the tip of her tail...I stroked her and hair just falls off...her coat is dull...I know she has chin acne...but lately she looks so sick. Last visit to the vet he gave her an antibiotic and told me to change her food because she has allergies. But now weeks later she looks terrible. I do not have the money to take her to a vet...I am un-sure of her age; because I adopted her and they didn't know...estimate is approx. 7-9 years old. Any clues? yes she is still eating...and drinking..and I saw her go to the 'bathroom' and have a bowel movement just this morning but not much. :( I know she is dying...I know this because I have had cats all my life...I have had her for over 3 years now...she was sick when she was adopted but the vet where I used to live got her back on her feet. Oh gosh...this is all happening so fast...

Hello and welcome.

Your cat really needs to go back to the vet.  There is a credit card for vet as well as human medical expenses called Care Credit.  Go to http://www.carecredit.com to learn about it. Or, maybe you could borrow some money from a friend or relative

There could be any number of things going on with your cat, but really, only a vet examining the cat could tell more accurately what might be wrong.  When you say her 'behind' looks red, brown and irritated, what exact part do you mean?  Do you mean around her anus, where poop comes out?  If so, she might have a problem with her anal glands, and needs to see a vet about that.  The anal glands could be impacted, or infected.

When the vet said the cat had allergies, what did he think she was allergic to?

Offhand, hair that falls off that is not part of normal shedding could possible be due to allergies, or hypothryoidism.  Or poor diet of low quality food.  What food are you feeding her?

We can come up with some ideas about foods to help figure out what she might be allergic to, but we need to know what you are feeding her now.

You said when you adopted her she was sick.  What was wrong with her at that time?

From what you said, I don't get the idea that your cat is dying.  Has she lost weight? Can you feel her ribs easily as in it feeling too bony?

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer...the vet thinks she is allergic to food..so I changed her food to Healthy Balance Duck and Pea. Yes the 'irritation' is around her anus. I have something to clean her with from the vet. Her hair falling out is much more than usual the tip of her tail is bald. So...I know you said she needs to go to a vet...unfortunately money is a big issue...and there is no credit for me anymore. I have a friend who is kicking in for me and my cat now...as I am unable; they have been more than generous. So yes maybe a little dramatic about her dying...but I know animals...so going to have to monitor her and to the best I can with what I have and call the vet and see what they say...I truly appreciate you answering me...it did confirm my suspicions. She has lost a little weight but....what helps me and her is she still has an appetite. ps this is the second time changing food...and we know how they don't like getting their food changed...:)

Hi auntchris1956!  Welcome to our forum!!!

I have been in your financial situation more than once (and am right now again) but I want to go back to Margaret's suggestion for Care Credit.  Please apply for this - even if you have bad credit - it's likely that they will give you a credit card.  That particular card is FOR people of low or no income or credit.  And I believe you have 6 months to pay the money back at NO INTEREST.  It's good for people doctors too.

If your cat has hypothyroidism - she needs meds as soon as possible before her other organs start having problems and making her even worse.  One of the better "store brand" foods is Purina One (dry).  I don't know what you are feeding her now - but you might want to try that.  I have 6 cats and a feral that I feed and the most popular flavor is the "salmon and tuna" (in one bag).

Hi! oh thank goodness! I found a good old fashion vet around the corner from me! and one shot and she has been on the mend! yes I read too about plastic bowls got rid of them a long time ago...thank you...and now I am buying Fancy Feast for the wet food and she loves it...and the dry is Purina Naturals...she always ate that...and when I had went through 2 bags of hypo-allergenic (?) dry food...there was no difference...the vet (as others) have told me this will be an on going condition...so I might want to switch to pills for economy wise...just so hard to get them in her...she is so sensitive...but it is so wonderful to see her healing...and quick! I was so worried...any way wanted to let you know..I don't know how to post this...but wanted to thank ALL of you! I'll be back I'm sure... kittyandsmiley
