The Procter & Gamble Company (P&G), is voluntarily recalling two specific lots of its Iams Veterinary Formulas Feline Renal 5.5 lbs Cat Food as a precautionary measure, as it has the potential to be contaminated with salmonella. A FDA analysis identified a positive result on the lot codes listed below. The affected lots are:

Lot code 01384174B4 with UPC code 0 19014 21405 1

Lot code 01384174B2 with UPC code 0 19014 21405 1

People who have purchased dry cat food with these codes should discard it. People handling dry pet food can become infected with Salmonella, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with surfaces exposed to this product.

Pets with Salmonella infections may have decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. If left untreated, pets may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has eaten the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

This is the renal food I buy for Sven, but, thankfully, these lot numbers are NOT on the bag we have in house right now.  Let's hope these are the only lot number effected!!

Sally, as I feared might happen, the recall has been expanded to include all UPC codes and all sizes of the Iams Veterinary Forumula for Feline Renal, with the "best by" dates of July 1, 2010 - Dec. 1, 2011.

Maybe that's why Callie has had a couple of bouts of diarrhea lately!! catuhh  Luckily, she's likes plain yogurt, so I fed her some after I discovered her "problem", and it seemed to fix her right up (until the next time)

When I called Iams, they asked me all kinds of questions, like whether I felt the cats had become sick from the food, etc., but since Callie is the only one who has had any issues, I couldn't say for sure, although I DID tell them about her diarrhea, which, for her, is VERY unusual.  And, of course, since Sven has kidney issues, he throws up foam with some regularity, so can't blame that on the food, not that he eats much of it anyway.  Seems that all the other cats eat it except the one who needs it!

Anyway, SO GLAD you told me the recall had been extended, because our bag fell into the new category now, so into the trash it went, and since it was almost a full bag, they're reimbursing us about $30 too.  I suppose if I'd pushed the issue, they would have paid for all my babies to go to the Vet, but since they all have appointments next week anyway for their semi-annual/annual exams, that wouldn't be right.  BUT, I'll be sure and mention it to our Vet and if there are any issues which arise from it, I might have to contact them back.  Long term, though, I don't think it's anything like that other recall, which caused several dealths catsad.  This is a voluntary recall.  Whew!

Geez Sally!  I sure hope all your kids are ok!!!  Good that you are taking them in next week for their check-ups.  Keep an eye on them till then though just in case something "odd" pops up.
